I Answered Yes

.: From the 2006 Canada Census:

8. The Statistics Act guarantees the confidentiality of your census information. Only if you mark “YES” to this question will your personal information be made public, 92 years after the 2006 Census. If you mark “NO” or leave the answer blank, your personal information will never be made publicly available. If you are answering on behalf of other people, please consult each person.

Does this person agree to make his/her 2006 Census information available for public release in 2098 (92 years after the census)?

I answered no. I think there is a possibility that I might still be alive 92 years after completing this year’s census, (see Kurzweil, “The Singularity is Near”), and I would be embarrassed if my descendants saw how little money I make in 2006 dollars.

I got the form and I am hoping to ignore it because it is a huge invasion of privacy. generating data that fascinates historians and sociologists, but doesn’t seem to affect the real world. It seems to me that regardless of any promises in the form, the law can change. I know that academics constantly lobby for better access to the raw data and the right to publish.

On another note, I see you went back to the Black Letterhead style. I think it does load faster, and it is quite legible. I have the Fasterfox extension in Firefox which times page loads. Your main page takes about 1.7 or 1.8 seconds fyi. I saw Jason’s comment but I did not have this extension running when you tested the other style.

  3. Randy Says:

I answered yes because I received the simple census form, which didn’t ask for much beyond basic info.

I agreed with Jason. I am not spending enormous amounts of time blogging lately, so haven’t invested much effort in the template. The version here is an update, Black Letterhead 1.2. I’ll go with this for a while.

In case you missed an interview on “As it Happens” this evening, the Canada Census software has been outsourced to Lockheed, and some people are calling for a protest, boycott, filling in information upside down, etc…
