You, Me and (Cousin) Dupree

.: Owen Wilson’s current stinkbomb, You, Me & Dupree, has garnered the attention of our boys Don and Walt over at Steely Dan Inc. Seems that they are concerned about the obvious parallels between the premise of the movie (relative comes home and spends time on the couch) and their 2000 Grammy Award winning song, Cousin Dupree. In a hilarious open letter to Owen’s brother, Luke, they write:

Hey Luke –

Hey man – it’s, like, Don and Walt, we’re the guys from Steely Dan, the group, we won those Grammies that time, maybe you recall? You know. “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number”?
“Reelin’ in the Years?” “Hey Nineteen”? “Babylon Sisters”? Right, that’s us. So how’s it going?

After some further prelim discussion and explanations, they go on to say:

What we suspect happened is this: some hack writer or producer or whatever they call themselves in Malibu, or Los Feliz apparently heard our Grammy winning song “Cousin Dupree” on the radio and thought, hey, man, this is a cool idea for a character in a movie or something. OK, so the “cousin” idea was no doubt eliminated so as not to offend the Fundamentalist ticket buyers in the Flyovers. Nevertheless, they, like, took our character, this real dog sleeping on the couch and all and put him in the middle of some hokey “Down and Out in Beverly Hills” ripoff story and then, when it cam time to change the character’s name or whatever so people wouldn’t know what a rip the whole thing was, THEY DIDN’T EVEN BOTHER TO THINK UP A NEW F*CK*NG NAME FOR THE GUY!”

The letter goes on and on – read it and have a good laugh. It ends with:

P.P.S We’re now seeing that according to Wikipedia, Owen older than you are. But you seem a lot more mature somehow…don’t you?”

Can’t wait to see the boys perform on Long Island on August 17.

.: I am in Winnipeg. I arrived last night around 0045 hrs in the morning, after a long and uneventful drive.

Are they serious? If they are, what a bunch of losers. Seriously, this is stupid.

What does the line …” the brother of Zal Yanovsky ” in their letter
    refer to?
I know Zal was a member of The Lovin’ Spoonful. What did he do that made The Dan mention him ?

  3. Randy Says:

Good question, I was wondering about that myself. I don’t understand the reference, and Zal died in 2002, so who knows? Perhaps yet another cryptic Dan reference from the boys.

  4. m Says:

I saw Steely Dan perform last night at the Soboba casino. Walter Becker remarked, “The Wilson brothers are threatening to sue the piss out of us!”

…And no, they’re not serious. If they were, they’d be suing the producers of “You, Me, and Dupree.” They’re just being their sardonic selves.

  5. Thom Says:

The Zal reference is due to the fact that he ratted on his dealer to the cops when he was arrested, in order to avoid jail. In other words, a snitch. He was thrown out of the group and totally ignored by all and sundry for the rest of his musical career.

Funny, the guy over at has a different take on this story. Bewarned, he’s no fan. I read the lyrics and while I haven’t seen the movie I can’t for the life of me expect to find romantic incest in there. Or at least I think cousins is incest, maybe not in the south, they with the ways different than our own. If anyone has something to complain about in story stealin’ it’s Kaufmann and Hart. The wrote the play of The Man Who Came To Dinner back in 1942. There’s probably something older that I don’t know about. The unwanted guest plot has been used so many times. Why didn’t they complain to the writer? It was his first gig, and so many new writers nowadays are reduced to recycling old plots. It’s so hard to think up anything new. I like the Wilson brothers and don’t think Bottle Rocket is their best work by any streatch of the imagination. Someday I’ll see You and Me and Dupree, it can wait, and in the mean time I can watch some of those other Owen Wilson movies.
IT’s hot here. How was Winnipeg.

  7. not a critic Says:

Call it sardonic humor, sarchasm, what have you. Perhaps its just an attempt at some cheap publicity, and to think they could have just announced to People magazine that they were gay… Seriously, funny stuff here,,, now lets get back to the music.

  8. Kitt Says:

Actually, there’s one more funny thing: Owen’s statement in response to The Dan’s accusations:

“I have never heard of the song ‘Cousin Dupree’ and I don’t even know who this gentleman, Mr. Steely Dan, is. I hope this helps to clear things up and I can get back to concentrating on my new movie, ‘HEY 19.'”
